Antiaging is an Inside-Ouside Job
Antiaging techniques for the babyboomers should not be much different than for the younger 30's crowd. Granted, their bodies are younger but the basic needs are still there. They still need good nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction and many of the other things that we need. (We, meaning babyboomers). The amount of each item may be the bigger factor and given time, they to will feel the need to try to stop the clock from ticking.
See my page on good nutrition for a well balanced diet in order to obtain the proper antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Some of your best antioxidant foods are your fruits and vegetables and should be obtained through a wide variety of these. Antiaging vitamins would include your B vitamins, that is B2, B6 and B12 and vitamin A, C, and E.
Well, how do we fight this thing called old age? I have made the statement that it is an inside-outside job. In order to look younger on the outside, it is almost a necessity to feel younger. To feel younger, we must have a healthy internal body as well.
Let's Take a Look at the Inside First
Some do indeed call the process 'antiaging techniques' but it is more like a battle that is going on within our bodies. As with any war, whoever or in this case, whatever is given the best artillery just may win the battle.
Our bodies go through a metabolic process in which it must have the proper items to function well and to continue to function well. Some of these things are obtained by good nutrition. Good nutrition will supply the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber that the body needs. Eating well is the primary way to obtain all the needed nutrients for our bodies. Forever Young, The Anti-Aging Guide is an in depth guide to teach us how to prevent and reverse the aging process.
Let's talk about the antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent the formation or occurrence of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are simply molecules in the body that have lost an electron and become harmful to us. They are harmful because they interfere with and damage healthy cells. These cells can be part of any organ or tissue of the body. Thus, the damage over time may result in heart disease, cancer, and yes our antiaging battle goes down in defeat.
When free radicals are left unchecked, a relatively new condition now called oxidative stress rears its ugly head. What is it? It is the vehicle which allows diseases to afflict us faster by the rampage of free radicals. Specifically, it takes place when we continuously allow the body's supply of antioxidants to diminish to the point that they can no longer control or neutralize the free radicals.
The following list of sources for antioxidants was obtained from http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au.
- Allium sulphur compounds - leeks, onions and garlic.
- Anthocyanins - eggplant, grapes and berries.
- Beta-carotene - pumpkin, mangoes, apricots, carrots, spinach and parsley.
- Catechins - red wine and tea.
- Copper - seafood, lean meat, milk and nuts.
- Cryptoxanthins - red capsicum, pumpkin and mangoes.
- Flavonoids - tea, green tea, citrus fruits, red wine, onion and apples.
- Indoles - cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
- Isoflavonoids - soybeans, tofu, lentils, peas and milk.
- Lignans - sesame seeds, bran, whole grains and vegetables.
- Lutein - leafy greens like spinach, and corn.
- Lycopene - tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon.
- Manganese - seafood, lean meat, milk and nuts.
- Polyphenols - thyme and oregano.
- Selenium - seafood, offal, lean meat and whole grains.

Now, How About the Outside
Did you know that our skin is our largest organ. It takes a lot of abuse and it was designed to do just that. It still deserves some outward antiaging prevention especially for babyboomers due to the aging process.
The outward prevention still begins on the inside. Our bodies function at the cellular level. There are over 500 million new cells produced in our bodies every day. As long as the cells have a clean and healthy environment, i.e. good nutrition, supplements, ect., they will continue to divide and repopulate into strong tissue. This includes the skin. Without this ability, the body begins to die.
Longevity and aging gracefully belongs to those who do the things to help this process. Back to the outward look. What are some of the things that we observe? One writer put it this way. "It's not so much about a need to look younger but a wish to look better - and maybe also preventing wrinkles from forming later on."
The truth is that if we do the necessary things to 'look better' in this antiaging battle we will be doing the things to keep our bodies more healthy. Check out Forever Young, The Anti-Aging Guide as one fabulous way to accomplish this.
Wrinkles, loose skin, oily skin, dry skin and age spots are some of the concerns of looking better. Let's go back to the free radical discussion and use age spots to explain what is happening to us.
When we have bad health practices, it allows too many free radicals to develop and that in turn creates metabolic waste. The waste eventually collects near the surface of the skin and we call that discoloration age spots. This same process also allows the skin to lose its elasticity through collagen loss and over time wrinkles appear and/or loose skin.
I won't re-discuss free radicals but I want you to understand our aging is much more than that. Antiaging research has shown that it is a combination of lifetime results. Poor nutrition, stress, poor sleep and many other lifestyle habits are all contributors.
It is Never Too Late
It is never too late to start and as baby boomers you know that is true. So what do we do? The same regimen applies. We start from the inside out.
- Adhere to a good nutrition program.
- Research and take the proper nutritional supplements.
- Keep a continuous flow of antiaging antioxidants (vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and flavonoids) in you.
- Drink plenty of water.
- For some, hormone replacement and injectables such as botox.
- For some calorie restriction has been a proven antiaging method.
- Use anti aging skin care products with sunscreen and alpha hydroxy acid to help retain moisture.
- Make use of a well rounded exercise program.
- Work on a stress reduction program.
- Get plenty of sleep.
According to the Center for Disease Control on their 'fast stats' page, we now have a life expectancy of 77.8 years. To me the more important issue is not the longevity but the quality of life. That, I know, is a personal factor but for me it is important.
I (speaking personally and as a baby boomer) don't want to consider old age as having a broken down body, memory loss and full of health problems. I want a life that will enable me to be fulfilling to myself and others. I think to be able to have that would be indeed antiaging and ageless.
