Minerals and the Baby Boomers

Minerals in fruits

Minerals, as are vitamins, are an essential part of staying healthy. Aging baby boomers need both and they must work together in order to be used properly by the body.

They play a vital role in the function of the body's organs and other systems. For instance, Zinc facilitates in the process of more than 300 enzymes that affect a huge number of biological processes.

Every organ of the body and most of it's systems are in need of specific minerals. The muscles need calcium and potassium. The reproductive system needs zinc. The heart benefits from zinc, calcium and potassium. Selenium benefits the kidneys and the liver.

There is a problem when it comes to the minerals that we need. The body cannot produce them. We must take them in as part of our nutrition or as dietary supplements. The body does, however, store them, primarily in the bone and muscle tissue, for a short time but must be resupplied regularly. Aging baby boomers must have a synergistic balance of supplements.

Vitamins and minerals work synergistically. There is also another catch in their use. Both minerals and vitamins are dependent on each other. There must be a synergistic relationship. That is to say, they must work together to accomplish what each was intended to do. When this relationship is successful, our bones, heart, red blood cells, muscle tissue, skin, and many other organs and functions of the body are all winners.

Vitamins and minerals work synergistically

Many of the body's potential conditions such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis with it's inflammatory problems, bone damage and many others are all dependent on this relationship. Stamina, endurance, antiaging and overall good health for aging baby boomers can be the result.

There are seven main minerals that the body needs. They are Calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, chlorine and sulfur. We then have several trace minerals that are essential to proper body function such as iron, zinc, selenium, manganese and a few more.

Obviously there are many minerals that would benefit all people in some ways but I will try to limit the list to those that most pertain to us the baby boomers.
