Vitamins and the Baby Boomers

Vitamins, either through diets or supplements, are an absolute necessity for aging baby boomers with today's lifestyles.

In an article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (Robert H. Fletcher, MD,MSc; Kathleen M. Fairfield, MD,DrPH; JAMA. 2002;287:3127-3129.) it is stated that "Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."

Vitamins are classified as either water-soluble or fat-soluble. This simply means that they dissolve easily in water or the fat-soluble are absorbed with the help of fats in the intestinal tract.

The water-soluble vitamins are fairly easily excreted, therefore they do not maintain a build up in the body. They include the B vitamins and vitamin C while the fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E and K. Each vitamin is needed by the body to perform certain jobs. Many of them work in a synergistic relationship with other vitamins and minerals.

To restate the obvious, most of our vitamin intake should be through nutritious meals. We also know that is not always possible in today's hectic lifestyles.

The fact also is that the older we get the more our bodies seem to not function as they should including the metabolic process. This is where we give it a little boost by providing the nutrients through supplementation that it sometimes does not get.
